Downey High School Music Teacher Alexis True

When passion, talent, and a genuine love for students come together, the result is Alexis True, a music teacher at Downey High School, who continues to strike all the right chords. This week, the California Music Educators Association will award True the Ernest R. Yee Illuminating Culture Award. This recognition celebrates her ability to use music as a powerful tool to honor cultural heritage and uplift her students.

True’s Unique Approach to Music Education

In her classroom, True goes beyond teaching scales and chords. It’s a dynamic space where students explore their cultural identities, connect with one another, and find the confidence to share their unique stories through music. She integrates music from composers of diverse backgrounds, ensuring students feel represented and valued.

“I spend every day making sure that my students feel welcomed and included in the music room,” True said. “This award is an honor, but my actions toward our students matter most to me. I want all students to feel important and included when they enter our campus.”

Innovation and Inclusivity.

Since joining Downey in 2020, True has expanded the music program to include a variety of courses such as Concert Band, Guitar, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Mariachi Music, and String Orchestra. The introduction of the Mariachi program stands out as a reflection of the school’s predominantly Hispanic student population.

“Many students weren’t enrolling in traditional music classes but were bringing guitars and playing music from their heritage. This inspired me to create a course where they could see themselves in the music they play,” True explained.

Support and Collaboration

True credits  Downey’s supportive administrators and her students for her success.

“My students inspire me daily. They teach me the importance of understanding and forgiveness while helping them grow as musicians and people,” she said.

Patrick Rodden, Assistant Principal at Downey High School, praised True’s dedication: “Seeing Alexis uplift students and staff is something everyone needs to experience.”

Broader Efforts in Music and Cultural Representation

Brandon Price, K-12 Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Coordinator for Modesto City Schools highlighted the significance of True’s work: “This award not only recognizes Alexis’ contributions but also reflects the district’s efforts to inspire students through culturally inclusive programs.”

With the support of Prop 28 funds, the district is strengthening and expanding arts and music programs, including incorporating cultural influences from Mexico, Japan, Zimbabwe, India, and Cuba. These efforts ensure students see their heritage reflected in their education.

Celebrating Excellence

True will formally receive this prestigious award at the inaugural CASMEC awards reception during the California All-State Music Education Conference in Sacramento on Thursday, January 16.

Modesto City Schools and Downey High School are singing her praises as we celebrate her incredible achievement.

With every note she teaches and chords she inspires, True creates a perfect harmony —nurturing musical talent while building a profound sense of belonging, pride, and cultural awareness in her students.
