Are you ready to explore the unique educational opportunities at Modesto High School? The School's International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) programs offer transformative learning experiences that prepare students for success in college and beyond.
What is the IB Program?
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program at Modesto High School offers students a rigorous and comprehensive education that encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning. It encourages cultural awareness and prepares students to thrive in top universities worldwide.
Research shows that IB Full Diploma students graduate college in four years at approximately a 30% higher rate than other students in the United States. Additionally, numerous colleges and universities accept IB students at a much higher rate than their peers from other programs.
What is AVID?
AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an elective program designed to increase the number of students who enroll and succeed in higher education and their lives beyond high school. AVID focuses on equipping students with essential academic skills such as organization, time management, and effective note-taking. The program also includes two hours of tutor-led study groups each week and comprehensive guidance on college applications and readiness.
As an AVID National Demonstration School, Modesto High School is recognized for its exemplary implementation of the AVID College Readiness System. This prestigious certification places Modesto High among the top 2% of all AVID schools in the United States, highlighting its commitment to preparing students for college and career success.
How Do IB and AVID Work Together?
"IB and AVID are separate, but we have found that they can complement each other well," says IB Coordinator Kerry Castellani. "If we group the IB students who are also taking AVID into the same AVID elective class, they can work on common courses and help with any problems they may have in classes. AVID can give that extra support to students who need it."
The IB and AVID coordinators also work closely to ensure students' success. "If a student in both programs is struggling, we meet with the student. This can provide a double support system," Castellani adds.
