In today’s world, where digital influencers shape trends and define what’s “cool,” Thomas Downey High School senior, Angel Lopez, is designing his own unique style and identity. A passionate member of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at Downey High School, Angel credits much of his personal and professional growth to the skills he’s gained through the program and mentorship from his teacher, Tera Coleman.

“FBLA has changed me in such a positive way—without FBLA, I wouldn’t be where I am today with my brand,” said Angel.

Originally from Stockton, Angel says he didn’t have access to specialized learning opportunities like those offered through Modesto City Schools' Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. Growing up, he faced challenges that many students experience but may not always talk about, such as struggles with self-confidence tied to socioeconomic difficulties. While his classmates sported the latest fashion trends, Angel had to make do with clothes that didn’t quite “fit.” This shaped his early experiences in school, making him feel out of place.

Everything began to change, however, when he walked into Downey High School and joined the FBLA program.

FBLA Teacher Tera ColemanColeman recalls the first time she met Angel.

“The first day of class, during our 30-second elevator pitch, Angel stood up and delivered an incredible speech about passion. His words floored the entire class.”

Recognizing his potential, Ms. Coleman encouraged Angel to pursue an FBLA pathway. She quickly connected him with opportunities, including a local business competition where he could showcase his entrepreneurial spirit.

One of Angel’s most memorable accomplishments came at the Central Valley Business Expo in Modesto in November. As part of the student entrepreneur portion of the event, Angel pitched his clothing brand, Celestial, and captivated the judges with his passion and creativity. The competition was intense, but Angel’s vision earned him second place, which came with a $2,500 prize and invaluable mentoring sessions with local business leaders. More recently, Angel has just placed second place in Impromptu Speaking at the FBLA Central Section Leadership Conference, which qualifies him for the FBLA State Leadership Conference. Angel also placed 9th in Public Speaking at the FBLA Central Section Leadership Conference that took place on February 8.

“Angel is a phenomenal young man with amazing talents and passion,” Coleman says of his recent win.

With Celestial beginning to gain traction on platforms like Instagram, Angel is another step closer to his vision of outfitting influencers with his unique designs. As a senior, he often reflects on his journey and encourages younger students to explore CTE pathways.

“Being in a CTE pathway was the entire reason I even knew about this competition. That’s what I love about the business skills pathway. You never know what opportunities are coming,” he shares.

Thanks to his hard work, determination, and support from  Coleman and FBLA, Angel is on his way to building a brand that not only represents his unique style but also highlights the power of perseverance and passion.

We can’t wait to see where Angel and Celestial go next!
